Apukka Resort – Staying in a Luxury Igloo in Rovaniemi

Apukka Resort is the perfect place to stay in Rovaniemi, Finland. The resort offers a variety of accommodations ranging from cozy cabins to two-story luxurious suites. There’s also lots of activities to do around the property, and you can even book excursions directly through the hotel. Apukka is one of the most unique places I’ve stayed, and I loved staying there during my 3 days in Rovaniemi.

Apukka Resort is located about 20 minutes outside of the Rovaniemi city center. The Rovaniemi airport is 15 minutes away, and Santa’s Village is only a 10 minute drive away. The property is located near a main highway, but I rarely heard any traffic from the road.

Our Room at Apukka Resort

During our stay at Apukka, we stayed in a Kammi Suite. Traditionally, “kammis” are accommodations built partially underground covered with moss. The Kammi Suites at Apukka Resort are a modernized version of this traditional Finnish building style. 

The suites are two stories. The bottom floor features two twin pull out beds, a kitchenette, a dining space, and the bathroom. Upstairs, there is a double bed with a 360 glass dome for northern lights viewing. The space is beautifully decorated with a mix of modern and traditional Finnish elements. As someone who loves aesthetics, the Kammi Suites are definitely a vibe.

The suite was perfect for our group of 4, but there are plenty of other accommodation styles at Apukka.

Amenities at Apukka Resort

Restaurant Aitta is the on-site restaurant and bar. The food is okay, but nothing to write home about. Breakfast is included in your stay and includes fruit, yogurt, an assortment of breads, eggs, cereal, and then a couple of rotating dishes served buffet style. There is also a lunch buffet and a dinner buffet for an additional cost. If you don’t want to eat the buffet food, they do offer an a la carte menu with some main dishes and pizza. 

One of the best parts of staying at Apukka is that you can book almost every activity directly through the resort. During our 3 days in Rovaniemi, we went dog sledding and took a snowmobile tour. They also offer snowshoeing, a snow train, and a couple of other activities. You can also take advantage of the free sleds and slide down the mound outside the front lobby.

Final Thoughts on Apukka Resort

Between the on-site activities and amazing rooms, Apukka Resort is a wonderful place to stay in Rovaniemi. I would definitely recommend staying in one of their Kammi Suites or aurora cabins for an igloo-esqe experience.
